Grant Green is one of the most exciting guitarists to emerge from the "soul jazz" genre. Born on March 31, 1911 in Charleston, SC, and died March 1, 1987 in Las Vegas. He learned his instrument from his father and was playing professionally by the age of 13 with a gospel group. He once said, "The first thing I learned to play was boogie woogie. Then I had to do a lot of rock and roll. It’s all blues, anyhow." His work remains a yardstick by which subsequent practitioners are measured.
